OLD BRIDGE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE )--Copper is fed to poultry not only as a nutritional supplement but also to aid in growth when added to feed in higher concentrations. Copper sulfate (CuSO4) is a common source of copper due to its bioavailability and affordability. Tri basic copper chloride (TBCC) is becoming a popular alternative to CuSO4, but is typically much more expensive. Old Bridge Chemicals, the largest manufacturer of Copper Sulfate in the USA, views Old Bridge copper carbonate (CuCO3) to be a more favorable economic and nutritional choice for poultry diets. Recent studies have shown that Old Bridge copper carbonate (CuCO3), can act as effectively as TBCC as a source of copper for poultry growth. What distinguishes Old Bridge CuCO3 from the CuCO3 of the past is the new method of CuCO3 manufacturing that Old Bridge Chemicals has developed. From this new method, Old Bridge obtains a product free of impurities which plagued the CuCO3 of the past. Old Bridge CuCO3 is a premium product of high quality that can meet all of the specifications necessary for use in feed and should not be dismissed due to CuCO3 reputation from over 50 years ago.

As seen in Graph 1, the chickens fed TBCC and Old Bridge CuCO3 were much heavier than the chickens fed copper sulfate. There was also found to be no statistical difference seen between the weights of the chickens fed TBCC and Old Bridge CuCO3. Old Bridge copper carbonate is just as bioavailable as TBCC in poultry and is a viable alternative for animal feed.

It was shown in multiple studies including the one seen above in Graph 1 that Old Bridge CuCO3 is much more bioavailable than the standard CuSO4 and also very similar to the bioavailability of TBCC. A major consideration, however is the cost of each copper source. Based on current market price, a truckload of Old Bridge CuCO3 is $37,000 less expensive than TBCC (See Graph 2). When purchasing large amounts of copper, the savings with Old Bridge CuCO3 is significant.

Graph 2 clearly depicts that purchasing Old Bridge CuCO3 provides the most savings. This graph however, does not include comparison to CuSO4 or factor in the relative biological value of each copper source. The advantage of buying Old Bridge CuCO3 over the other alternatives becomes even more obvious when relative biological value is incorporated into the analysis. Based on the known biological availability of these compounds and the price of 100,000lbs of copper, (Graph 3), one can save over $100,000 when purchasing Old Bridge CuCO3 compared to TBCC.

The new production method of Old Bridge CuCO3 has resulted in a premium source of supplemental copper which is free of impurities, just as effective as TBCC towards poultry and also much more economical than the alternatives. Current studies are underway to show that Old Bridge CuCO3 can also be used for copper supplementation in swine.

Old Bridge Chemicals is the leading researcher and impetus for studies comparing TBCC to Copper Carbonate. All of research and studies have given the same and consistent results.
